ASftS at the UN Ocean Conference

The 2025 UN Ocean Conference, co-hosted by the Governments of France and Costa Rica, took place from 9 to 13 June 2025 in Nice, France. It focused on “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean”.

ASftS joined the Blue March; the Civil Society Assembly ‘Another Ocean Is Possible’ and the event ‘Elevating local voices into global ocean governance’, co-hosted by: Fauna & Flora and Seas At Risk in the Ocean Basecamp in the Whale. Together with the Embassy of the North Sea, we brought the perspectives of three sea creatures into the conference rooms by a poster campaign.

The ocean emerges strengthened from the UN Ocean Conference in Nice. With more countries supporting a ban on deep-sea mining, more protected areas in the ocean and more pledges to take action against pollution. The question now is whether countries will put their money where their mouth is. After all, the ocean movement faces a camp with powerful stakeholders. Read our report on MO* (NL)
