Kick off MiningImpact-3

A Seat for the Sea was selected as partner of the third phase of the MiningImpact3 project on the ecological aspects of deep-sea mining. The project aims to fill critical knowledge gaps about deep-sea ecosystems and the potential consequences of mining activities for them. Different from its predecessor projects, research will not only focus on polymetallic nodule fields but also address massive sulphide deposits, combining existing data with new expeditions to advance our understanding of these unique environments.

For the first time, the mining impact project invites artists to explore how science and art can nourish each other. This partnership aims to facilitate a greater understanding of research into the impact of deep-sea mining and promote deeper public engagement, combining analytical research with intuitive imagination.

The research consortium brings together experts from Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, and the United Kingdom. Results will directly inform the ongoing development of international regulations at the International Seabed Authority (ISA) and support evidence-based policymaking for deep-sea resource management.

The kick off meeting takes place from 09 Sep 2025 till 12 Sep 2025 - Ghent University, BE
