We are delighted to announce that we will be taking part in the Beyond the Black Box festival in Antwerp on 14 May.
*A shadow cannot be grasped at a single glance. There is no single way to look at it; there are always several. Deep-sea mining is such a shadow, an emerging industry that remains (for now) invisible. In the performance installation ‘Beyond the Dirt, in 5 Selfies’, we explore this.
The performance takes place within an installation. We descend into the hypnotic power of a marine microcosm, until the rhetoric softens and justifies the colonisation of this pristine area. The industry tells one side of the story. Other worldviews express a sense of connection – with nature, with water; they reveal alternative relationships with the planet’s so-called ‘raw materials’.
Like a tangible gateway, the performance combines text, scent, image and sound. A sensory and critical experience that lays bare the tensions between fascination with the ocean and extractive violence. The ending is open; the unthinkable lies within reach.*
